BME Dept at a glance


The Department of Biomedical Engineering was founded in 2014. The Department resides in the 7th floor of Tower 2 of MIST. There are 3 full-time faculty members with primary appointments in Biomedical Engineering, and numerous adjunct faculties and affiliates. Extensive facilities include teaching and research laboratories that provide students with access to contemporary research instruments specially selected for their relevance to biomedical engineering.

The first batch of undergraduate students started classes from 5th February 2015 and consists of 41 students. The first batch of post-graduate students (M.Sc./M.Engg.) consists of 5 students and started classes from 4th November, 2015.

Deeply interdisciplinary, biomedical engineering applies modern approaches from the experimental life sciences in conjunction with theoretical and computational methods from engineering, mathematics and computer science to the solution of biomedical problems of fundamental importance, such as human health. This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine, combining the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to advance health care treatment, including diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy. Applications include the development of biocompatible prostheses, various diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices ranging from clinical equipment to micro-implants, common imaging equipment such as MRIs and EEGs, regenerative tissue growth, pharmaceutical drugs and therapeutics.
